It was a thrilling end to the now infamous Time to Attack: Sepang series of time attack challenges held by Zerotohundred.com. Held in conjunction with the network’s 10 year anniversary, previous lap records were blown to smithereens with Farriz Fauzy clocking the fastest time of the day, an astonishing 2:19:785, in the Links-Mofaz Racing Nissan GT-R around the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).As it was the final round of the series, dubbed ‘The Finale,’ only the quickest of quick from the three previous rounds held through the year were invited back to battle it out for total bragging rights and a final spot on the Hall of Fame.

Prior to the time attack session, an open track day was held that saw some of the time attackers participate as well in an effort to get the most out of their machines and further familiarise themselves with the circuit.

Right from the get-go, the atmosphere was understandably tense as the drivers were out to stake their claim as the fastest man around the SIC. This time around though, the participating cars had to undergo a scrutinising process before being allowed out on the track in a move to eliminate all uncertainties that stemmed from the previous rounds.

This time around, Farriz was back with a vengeance to reclaim his fastest time title that was snatched at the very last moment in the previous round. In the first round, Farriz managed a 2:30:421 around a very damp SIC, a time that stood strong through the dry second round only to be smashed by Kazama Racing in the third round on their very last lap by Lai Wee Sing in their Kazama Racing Honda Civic Type-R, that notched a 2:28.249.

In the final round, Farriz proved his intentions to take back the fastest lap time as soon as his tyres hit the asphalt. On his very first hot lap, he pulled a 2:23:609 to wipe the floor with all previous records. That time would remain as the fastest in the Supercars class as he ran that on semi-slick tyres.

Having just warmed up, Farriz then had a set of full slick tyres fitted to the Links-Mofaz Racing GT-R and went out to try and better his overall time in the Time Attack Machines class.

As the day came to an end, he had managed the 2:19:785 to leave the rest of the field wondering what hit them. Such was the dominance of Farriz that his fastest time in the Supercars class, the 2:23:609, would have still netted him the overall fastest time with seconds to spare.

Coming in second was Ronnie Chen in the Ascendant Motorsports Porsche 997 Turbo with a time of 2:25:796, also in the Time Attack Machines class as he ran full slick rubbers.

The final spot on the podium went to Ling Ken Ji in the HKS Garage-R Nissan Silvia S15 with a time of 2:26:331. Although Ken Ji ran on semi slick tyres, he was still placed under the Time Attack Machines class due to the nature of his ride, a pure time attack prepped beast.

A number of Renault Megane RS250 Cup’s were also out on track, led by former Singapore A1GP driver Denis Lian in an attempt to better his record lap time for the car at SIC.

Apart from the time attack session itself, there was also a drag race purely for Nissan GT-R’s at the end of the day. That led to one of the largest GT-R gatherings. Once again, it was Farriz that crossed the finish line ahead of all the other cars to win the GT-R drag battle as well.

The final round of the Time to Attack: Sepang series was the stage for all the quickest drivers out there to step up and be counted. They all did as the lap times fell drastically compared to the previous rounds. In fact, the nine overall fastest times from the final would have easily eclipsed the fastest time from the first round.

Plans are already in the works for the Time to Attack 2011 series by Zerotohundred.com, so stay tuned for a more exciting season of time attack with much more drama thrown in the mix.

Racerevo’s view of the Time To Attack Finale 2010

From Racerevo.com: It was a perfect 10 years anniversary for Zerotohundred, celebrated with four rounds of Time Attack at Sepang. The finale which is the invitation-only round was the cream of the crop battle. Only the best were present to sweep through Sepang at blazing speed in order to gain the top honour of winning the first ever Zerotohundred Time Attack Challenge and set the benchmark in the Hall of Fame.

The event was smooth sailing, the Zerotohundred men at work were dedicated. And together with the support of sponsors and partners such as Renault, Goodyear, Links, Mofaz, HPC and many others it was of no surprise. We would like to see the joint effort to continue into the future. For us, it goes to show that collaboration with the right people can go a long way.

Thinking into the future, we would see ourselves getting more involved with this new phenomena, we want to try to get to know the community better so that we could promote them better. This would be RaceRevo’s next immediate goal.

So who’s the fastest? Farriz dominated the finale after being absent in the 2nd and 3rd round. The wet weather which prevents Farriz from using slicks in the first round is no more. This time it was hot and humid, typical Sepang weather. With slicks on, Farriz managed an unbeatable time of 2.19.785 thus winning Supercars and Time Attack Machines category. Both categories are undoubtedly the highest honour in the challenge.

So the top honours goes to the best man with the best machines. However the recent Time Attack was not about one category, for a full rundown of the list of results, go to HERE

Let me introduce team partner duo, Ken Ji and Mr Nismo. Mr Nismo was on a temporarily converted drifting machine, but it doesn’t seem to stop him from getting very near to his team partner on a Hiper DCM Silvia S15 registering a close 0.2 of a seconds apart from each other. Ken Ji registered 3rd place in TAM category while Mr Nismo is 4th.

The closer we examine these two machines, the more extraordinary it appears. Both have red striking lively liveries, Both have interesting stuffs under the hood, polished showroom ready shining metal equipments. Both are not only fast but pleasing to the eyes as well. Even after they get the abuse during the Time Attack sessions. Keep it clean and tidy is Mr Nismo and Ken Ji’s way. Presentation was top notch and certainly an attention grabber. We are pretty sure they had everything plan in mind before breathing the car into life.

Hot favorite Kazama racing topped the timesheet in the NA category. Here is the team boss giving an interview to a media before the start of challenge. He was looking confident, his crew was quite relax. Perhaps the sign of victory emerge a step earlier than it should be.

They plan their strategy well, with a talented Lai Wee Sing at the wheel, things were running as pre planned. No chaotic moments in the pit, the perfect day at the office for Kazama Racing Team.

As the event progresses, cars go out and dived into the pits on regular basis. To give you an idea, it was like a F1 qualifying weekend with an old format. One of the reason they are doing this is because the track as is alive and ever changing in character.

So drivers are taking every possible chance to be out there on track with different setups to optimise the available grip. And hopefully when the curtain slips down, they will manage to nail it big time.

As usual, the name of the game is to prepare the right tyres with the right properties. It’s the most important single piece of components on a race car. You cant afford to get it wrong. It will cost time and a set of rubber. It doesn’t comes cheap at this level.

Technicians and engineers have neither yet fully succeeded in grasping the mysteries of car physics despite all the years of comprehensive study. It’s normal hence you hear phrases such as ” we got it wrong not the way we wanted, the setup was a mess, it was not drivable, and we try many new things and all of it didn’t work”.

Racing cars are like human body and soul, it is one part of physics, it is very complicated and mysterious. It has attributes and it has characters just like us. If we had known race cars with certainty and accuracy then the consequences is, margin of failures will be zero.

And I have problem with that, it will take away the thrills and dramas which often a script to a blockbuster story. Spectators needs the unknown factor, it is a recipe for any successful sporting event.

Now back on to the event, if we analyse the time, most of the participants in the finale has upped the ante. No more testing the water. It’s now or never, the HOF is certainly a nice place of bragging to be honest. In my opinion, this is the motivation that drives the participants to push the boundaries even further this time around.

Zerotohundred set out on their search for the fastest man on their 10th anniversary and Farriz have answered the call. To add, zerotohundred have not only succeeded in inviting petrolheads around Malaysia to compete with each other in their respective categories, but has set a new brand of competition in which every levels of car enthusiasts can take part in. We know zerotohundred have few things in the bag plan for next year and we wish them every success.

Finally to part with, some philosophical BS to ponder with. We are finite being, and racing machines have infinite possibilities. The finite will never be able to fathom the infinite and that’s probably why we, the petrolheads will never feel tired of this whole thing.

TTAF: MrNismo fights his own Hiper DCM Silvia S13 at 2:26.3

Ee Yoong Chern, well known in the Drift scene and Drift.com.my pioneer, temporarily transformed his drift monster into a circuit weapon for the Time to Attack Finale. Although necessary steps were taken to ensure maximum grip on the circuit, the drift-biased machine remembers its real purpose. Watch as MrNismo (what he’s known as) ironically clock very similar times with his team partner, Ken Ji, though their driving styles differ entirely.

Finale Report: The game was brought as the times were attacked for The Finale

It was game time, and only the cream of the crop were back to set aside the men from the boys. Bringing you’re A-game was mandatory, and boy did they bring it. The time to step up and be counted was finally upon them and based on the time sheets, every single driver was up for the count as Zerotohundred.com’s Time to Attack: Sepang, The Finale, came down to the wire at the Sepang International Circuit on 12 December 2010.

Right from the get go, it was hustle and heave for everybody involved. Some of the drivers even took part in the open track session that was earlier to warm up and get a feel for the track on that particular day, a very important aspect in wringing out the most from your ride.

The day was definitely one of mixed feelings; intrepidation, anxiety, confidence and a plethora of others. You could tell from the atmosphere in the pits, even from early on, the big boys were there to win. Not that the privateers weren’t focussed or there for a Sunday morning cruise, they were every bit as intent on winning, just that they knew how to crack a smile and throw in a laugh every now and then.

Things got underway in the same order as the last rounds, with a briefing for the drivers followed by circling the pit lane and main straight to check for malfunctioning transponders. This time around though, the cars had to undergo a scrutinising process to ensure they met the requirements of their class.

As the pit lane opened and the first of the groups were let out, it was now or never for the drivers. Following the first three rounds, the man to beat this time was Lai Wee Sing, driving the Kazama Racing Honda Civic Type-R, that blew the timing sheets wide open from the previous round, clocking a 2:28:249 to break the vice grip of Farriz Fauzy in the Links-Mofaz Racing Nissan GT-R that managed a 2:30:421 from the first round on a dam track. Another driver to break that mark was Ling Ken Ji in the HKS Garage-R Nissan Silvia S15 that notched a 2:28:720, a mark that stood until Wee Sing broke it on the final lap of his group.

Having held onto the fastest lap time for the first two rounds, Farriz wasn’t going to let it go without a fight. He was there for the overall crown, and he showed it as soon as his tyres hit the asphalt.

On the first run itself, Farriz clocked in a 2:23:609 to obliterate all previous records, and he was just warming up too. That time would remain as the fastest in the Supercars class.

The weather was near perfect this time around too, no doubt a cardinal factor in the times falling faster than guy’s tongues at a burlesque show, so much so in fact that the four fastest times of the day were quicker than the previous round’s fastest time.

The day belonged to Farriz though, as he soon slapped on full slicks and took to the track again under the Time Attack Machines class in an attempt to slash precious tenths of a second off his time.

At the end of the day though, he managed more than that as he crossed the finish line in an astonishing 2:19.785 to leave the rest of the field in his wake. Even his lap time in the Supercars class, the 2:23:609 he clocked on his first lap would have seen him top the overall time sheets.

Coming in a not-so-close second was Ronnie Chen in his Ascendant Motorsports Porsche 997 Turbo that clocked a 2:25:796 in the Time Attack Machines class, running on full slicks as well. In the Supercars class, Ronnie managed a 2:30:754.

Completing the podium was Ling Ken Ji, getting his revenge over Wee Sing in the Kazama Racing CTR, notching a 2:26:331, in his time attack-prepped Silvia S15. Ken Ji ran semi-slick tyres on his car but was still classified under the Time Attack Machines class due to the nature of his ride.

There was some drama too throughout the day to spice things up. One of the cars caught fire in the pits after a hot run but things were brought under control with nobody hurt and hopefully not too much damage to the machine.

Although the atmosphere was pretty tense in the pits, there were some laughs here and there, with the best one being the rescue pick-up that broke down while pulling out a car from the gravel trap. It was pretty comical to see the truck pulling the car and then white smoke started billowing out from under the hood, which lead to the marshals popping the hood and having a look. the incident ended with the truck being left there and the marshals pushing the car back onto the track by hand.

Speaking of smoke, some turbines met their demise on the day, turning the cars into smoke machines are they limped back into the pits, effectively putting an end to the day.

There were a number of Renault Megane RS250 Cup’s running the track as well, being used for what they were designed for. The feedback was positive from the owners, further proof of the car’s track-assassin capabilities. Former Singapore A1GP driver Denis Lian, was on hand again to put one of the cars through its proper paces.

All in all, it was a fitting finale to the series. The stage was set for the best of the best to step up and give their all, and they did just that, breaking all expectations and lap records in the process. Such was the improvement from the first round that the top nine times of the finale were quicker than the fastest time in the first round.

It has been an awesome time putting the series together, and with the extremely positive response we received, it won’t be long before Zerotohundred.com is back with Time to Attack: Sepang 2011. Till then, stay tuned for more shots of the event together with the finalised official timings that will soon be released on the Hall of Fame.

Ken Ji’s super-smooth 2:26.3 Onboard Lap Video at the 2010 Time To Attack Finale – HKS Time Attack Silvia S15

Best Lap: 2m 26.3s : After struggling with oversteer at ‘ZTH TTAS: The Final Call’, some setup changes were made to the car to give the rear end more stability. Unexpectedly, handling was dogged by understeer from turn-in to apex today – cornering speeds at T5-6, T7-8 and T-12 weren’t fantastic. But more importantly, the strong understeer (even when trail braking into corners) meant that i either had to back off to let the nose hang on, or open up the throttle and deal with oversteer.

The high track temperatures may have contributed to the lack of grip (it was measured at 44 deg C at 5pm!) – tail started skating around under braking in the 2nd session, and i overshot my turn-in points for T1 and T9 pretty bad heheh.

Post-mortem with Denis Lian at day’s end suggests that I may have gone the wrong with with damper adjustments… oh well, live and learn ;-)

Still, it was good enough for a new personal best time of 2m 26.3s today. Many thanks to all at Onward Motorsports (OMS) and HKS Garage R for their tireless efforts in getting the Silvia to where it’s at. Faster times to come! :)
